How to Inherit Eternal Life According to Christ.

In today’s scripture study, we’ll explore the commandments that believers are called to keep to receive the promise of eternal life.

Disclaimer: I will be using the name Jesus as it is written in the English bible, I understand different people call him a different name, but here I’ll just be using the name as it is written, you can replace Jesus with whatever name you call the son.

Mar 10:17  And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?
Mar 10:18  And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

Now Christ is going to tell him what he must do to receive eternal life, notice the set of laws he is going to list.

Mar 10:19  Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.

This is what the most high ( TMH) has always cared about, the morality of the law, how you treat one another, being a good person, it was bigger than just a environment.

Mar 10:20  And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.
Mar 10:21  Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

What was it that he lacked? Covetous , he loved his possessions.

Mar 10:22  And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.
Mar 10:23  And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

We can see the commandments Christ was referring to was specifically the moral law.

1Jn 2:1  My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
1Jn 2:2  And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Christ is the subject here, the he is talking about him, he’s the subject of this chapter.

1Jn 2:3  And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
1Jn 2:4  He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him

You know someone is a believer if they walk and keep Christ commandments/ teachings. Christ is the one telling us how to receive eternal life, not moses.

1Jn 2:5  But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
1Jn 2:6  He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

You do this by following his words.

1Jn 2:7  Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
1Jn 2:8  Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.

In verse 7 John says he is not writing a new commandment but then in verse 8 he ended up saying, he’s writing a new commandment, what is the text saying? It’s the same commandment its not new, what’s new is the standard of it, Christ raised the bar, he enforced it.

Joh 13:33  Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you.

Joh 13:34  A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

Under the old covenant, it says to love thy neighbor as thy self, under the new covenant it’s still telling you to love your neighbor but instead of as thy self, we suppose to love each other as Christ loved us, that’s what makes it new. True love is the level of love Christ showed us. Back to 1 john 2

1Jn 2:9  He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.

You can claim to be Christ all you want but if the way you treat your brother doesn’t reflect that then your faith is vain.

1Jn 2:10  He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.

1Jn 2:11  But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

You are in spiritual blindness because you are not walking in the spirit of love.

Joh 14:6  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Joh 14:7  If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

Christ is the way to salvation, if you want eternal life you cannot go to Moses, Muhammad or anyone you can think off, it comes through Christ, he speaks the word of his father, whatever he command us automatically is commanded by the father.

Joh 14:10  Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

See this? Christ is not teaching his own doctrines, but everything he is teaching is directly from the most high (TMH)

Joh 14:15  If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Christ commandments is everything that he says.

Joh 14:21  He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

When you walk in obedience to Christ words he will manifest in us spiritually.

Joh 14:22  Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
Joh 14:23  Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

His commandments is everything that he taught, his words.

Joh 14:24  He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

Christ didn’t come with ” thou shalt, thou shalt not” his laws was based on your everyday life, your character as a whole.

how to respond in real-time situations—staying calm, showing love, even when facing hostility. Matthew 5 reminds us to develop spiritual maturity. It’s not easy, but it teaches us to stay composed, even when we know someone has bad intentions. Jesus taught us to pray for those who mistreat us, helping us rise above and stay spiritually grounded.

Joh 15:1  I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
Joh 15:2  Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

When you truly understand what the Word says, certain things won’t shake you anymore, because you know the Most High is faithful to His promises. reminds us that anyone who isn’t producing fruit—those trying to cheat the system or live unrighteously—will be removed. But those who are bearing fruit will be pruned or refined, so they can bear even more fruit

Joh 15:3  Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

Under the law, Israel wasn’t truly clean; the law acted like a temporary measure, a pacifier until the coming of the Son. But when Christ came and gave His Word and commandments, those who receive and follow them are now made clean through His teachings.

Joh 15:4  Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

Abide means to stay rooted in faith, remaining righteous even when facing persecution or challenges. It’s about consistently doing what’s right, overcoming the desires of the flesh and the pull of ego. Living in the spirit of righteousness doesn’t make you a pushover; it means you’re acting in line with what the Spirit guides, not reacting out of pride or fear. You can’t bear fruit or stay on the right path if you’re led by your emotions instead of the Spirit.

Joh 15:5  I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Joh 15:6  If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

those who profess faith but fail to live it out, or live in a way that contradicts their profession.

Joh 15:7  If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

Christ commandments is his words/teachings.

Joh 15:8  Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

God is glorified when we bear much fruit—whether through sharing the truth, growing in grace, or doing good works. These fruits show that we are truly rooted in Christ. When we live righteously, displaying God’s grace and mercy in our lives, we bring glory to Him. Our actions not only honor God but can also lead others to glorify Him.

Bearing fruit doesn’t make us Christ’s disciples, but it proves that we are, faith in him makes you, his disciples. Just as a healthy tree shows its goodness through good fruit, a fruitful life shows we are genuine disciples, bringing honor to both the father and the son.

Joh 15:9 As the father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

Christ perfectly followed everything the Father commanded Him to do—He obeyed the Father’s instructions fully. This isn’t about following the Torah alone, but about doing what the Father specifically commanded Him to do. We see throughout the Gospels how Jesus always acted in obedience to the Father’s will.

Just as Christ followed the Father’s instructions, we are called to follow the instructions He has given us, staying rooted in His love by living out His teachings

Joh 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
Joh 15:11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

Christ kept his fathers instruction now he wants us to keep his instructions.

This joy comes from the Holy Spirit and grows as we understand more about Jesus—His grace, sacrifice, and righteousness. It’s a joy that’s deep and glorious. Now let’s see the commandments he is talking about.

Joh 15:12  This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you

How did Christ love us? I t was in deeds and actions, even sacrificing Himself for those who didn’t deserve it.

The commandment: Love one another just as He loved us with selfless, sacrificial, unconditional love. The love Jesus showed wasn’t based on whether people deserved it. He loved us while we were still sinners.

What this means for us as believers: We need to mature in this kind of love. It’s challenging at first, but as we walk in it, we begin to truly understand it. Our love cannot be conditional, we need to walk in unconditional love.

means not basing our love on how others behave or treat us. It’s rooted in God’s love for us, not in external circumstances.

  • If your love depends on outside factors, you’ll constantly be reacting to situations.
  • But if your love is based on God, what others do or say won’t shake you. You’ll be able to see their flaws and still love them, staying grounded in your walk with Him.

The difference between the Old Covenant and the New Covenant is profound. Under the Old Covenant, Israel’s worship was outward and physical, focused on external practices like wearing specific clothes (such as fringes) and avoiding certain foods. It was a carnal worship, centered on rules and rituals.

In contrast, the New Covenant shifts the focus to a heart-based relationship with God. It’s no longer about adhering to ceremonial actions but about living out God’s love in every part of our lives. Worship now is spiritual, rooted in genuine faith and obedience, not just external observance.

Joh 15:13  Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Joh 15:14  Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

This again shows why Christ and John called this commandment new, because of the extent of it, we have to love each other on that level.

Joh 15:15  Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

Not servants anymore: Under the Old Covenant, Israel was treated more like servants, following rules without fully understanding the deeper purposes behind them. They lived under strict discipline, often with a sense of fear and obligation.

Now friends: With Christ, this changes. He no longer treats His disciples as servants who don’t know their master’s plans. Instead, He calls us friends because He shares with us the deeper truths of God’s will and the mysteries of grace.

Joh 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
Joh 15:17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

This is the doctrine of Christ: when you walk in the spirit of love, you naturally know how to live and how to treat others. You won’t need Moses to tell you not to charge interest to your brother, or to help if you see your brother’s animal in trouble. Walking in the spirit of love means you naturally begin to live according to the Spirit, doing what is right without needing to be told.

1Jn 3:21  Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
1Jn 3:22  And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

Keeping God’s commandments isn’t what earns His blessings—everything we receive is by His grace and through Christ’s sacrifice. However, obedience is a natural part of the life of those who truly know and follow Him.

1Jn 3:23  And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

The Father’s commandment is simple: to believe in the name of His Son and to love one another, just as Christ commanded.

  • The entire purpose of the law was to teach us love.
  • The Father’s goal was to lead us to Christ, and Christ taught us how to walk in love.
  • The law acted as a schoolmaster, guiding us to Christ, so we could fully understand and live out this love.

1Jn 3:24  And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

God commandments is Christ commandments, we read earlier Christ only command us what his father told him.

Jn 5:1  Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
1Jn 5:2  By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
1Jn 5:3  For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

Are these commandments about the law of Moses? No. They refer to keeping the commandments of Jesus. The Father’s commandments were given to the Son, who then delivered them to us in the way He intended

The ultimate goal is love. That’s why Christ summed up all the laws into two: love God and love your neighbor.

Christ teachings are from God, and following them isn’t burdensome—especially when rooted in love. It only feels difficult when you’re trying to do it in your flesh.

When TMH uses you to help others, it becomes an honor and a joy. You realize you’ve been chosen to be a light in a dark world, and even when facing unrighteousness from others, you can find peace and fulfillment in being a vessel of His love.

1Jn 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

1Jn 5:14  And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

As a believer, when you see someone struggling with sin, you are called to intercede for them. Go to TMH in prayer, asking Him to help and guide that person.

1Jn 5:15  And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
1Jn 5:16  If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

If you see someone committing a sin that’s serious or even worthy of death, don’t focus on asking TMH to destroy them. That’s not the attitude we’re called to have. Instead, we should always come from a place of love and intercession, praying for their repentance and restoration, rather than seeking judgment or punishment for them

Someone who truly understands love is calculated and deliberate in their actions. They recognize the importance of showing Godly love in a consistent and purposeful way, beyond temporary emotions.

1Jn 5:17  All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
1Jn 5:18  We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

Don’t make sin part of your lifestyle, you’re going to fall short but don’t practice sin.

1Jn 5:19  And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.
1Jn 5:20  And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

The love of Christ is the core commandment, and by walking in that love, you’re fulfilling both the Old and New Commandments.
