Post millennial reign: When its all said and done

Before we dive in, quick heads-up:

Grab the post called “How to Read the Old Testament Through New-Testament Eyes.” That lens is crucial for what we’re about to tackle. ( Click this link )

What’s this about?
This lesson walks through that final stretch—new creation, final judgment, and life forever.

Eschatology /ˌeskəˈtäləjē/ just a fancy word for studying “the last things”—death, judgment, and humanity’s ultimate future.

1 Thessalonians 4 : 13‑18 (KJV) — When Jesus Is on His Way Back

[13] But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
[14] For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

Some believers feared that dying before Messiah’s return meant missing out. Paul reassures them: if you die in the faith, you’re still safe.

[15] For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
[16] For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.

Believers who have died will rise first when He comes.

[17] Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
[18] Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

Those still living will immediately be gathered with them—and we will all be with the Lord forever.

Sequence of events

  1. Dead in Christ rise first.
  2. Living believers join them.

1 Corinthians 15

1 Corinthians 15 : 52‑55 (KJV) — The Instant Transformation

[52] In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
[53] For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
[54] So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
[55] O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

Paul describes the climax of the resurrection: a trumpet blast, the dead raised imperishable, and every living believer instantly changed into an immortal, glorified body.

Sequence the Bible gives us

  1. Christ returns.
  2. Dead in Christ rise first and accompany Him (1 Th 4 : 16).
  3. Living believers are caught up to meet them in the air (1 Th 4 : 17).
  4. All receive glorified, immortal bodies—“this mortal puts on immortality.”
  5. Death is forever defeated.

The “Millennial Reign”

  • Length: Scripture speaks of a “thousand years” (Rev 20 : 4), but we understand this as a symbolic way of saying a long, complete era rather than a literal 365,000 days.
  • Population: Only the righteous share this period; the wicked are judged and removed.

So after the trumpet sounds, every believer—dead or alive—will be transformed, death will lose its sting, and the Messiah’s reign will unfold in righteousness.

Revelation 20:11-15 KJV

And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

  • This is the throne of judgement

[12] And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

  • The two judgements:
    • When Jesus returns
    • Then we will go into the millennial kingdom
    • During the millennial reign there will be no wicked people, it will only consist of righteousness
      • Those who do not come under the truth when Christ return, they will die.
    • All those people that died that were wicked will be resurrected to go to the throne judgment to be judged and then put back to death.
    • We then go into the eternal kingdom of God and will live there forever (utopia)

[13] And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
Hell here means “the grave.” Every body—wherever it was laid to rest—rises to stand before God.

[14] And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Even death itself is thrown away. Anyone appearing at this throne is outside the Book of Life and faces the “second death.”

[15] And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
Only names recorded in Christ’s Book of Life escape; all others share the lake of fire.

After this judgment comes a brand‑new beginning—new heaven, new earth—where only righteousness remains.

Revelation 21 : 1‑4 (KJV) — A New Creation

Revelation 21 : 1‑4 (KJV) — A Brand‑New Creation

[1] And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
The old order—shot through with chaos and sin—vanishes. Even the “sea,” a Bible picture of unrest and evil (Isa 57 : 20), is gone.

[2] And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Picture millions of glorified believers—the true temple of God—descending together like a bride (1 Cor 3 : 16).

[3] And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God.
Immanuel in full: Jesus—God in flesh—lives among us, mind‑to‑mind and heart‑to‑heart.

[4] And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
Every trace of suffering is erased, silencing any notion of eternal slavery or oppression.

Isaiah 34 : 4 (KJV) — The Cosmic Reset

[4] And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree.
Stars, sun, moon—the whole “host” gets folded up like an old parchment, clearing the stage for the new.

2 Peter 3 : 12‑13 (KJV) — Melting the Elements

[12] Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
Peter echoes Isaiah: the very building blocks of the universe (sun, moon, stars) burn away.

[13] Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
The present world is warped by wickedness; God replaces it with a fresh, righteous order.

Leviticus 25 : 44‑46 (KJV) — Old‑Covenant Bond‑Service

[44] Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids.
Under Moses, Israel could purchase foreign servants. This is why some people assume there will be slaves in Christ’s kingdom.

[45] Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession.
The law let families keep these servants and pass the contracts to their heirs.

[46] And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour.
In Hebrew, “for ever” often means “for the duration of that arrangement,” not eternity. This bond‑service ended when the Old Covenant itself was fulfilled in Christ.

Revelation 21 : 5‑7 (KJV) — All Things New

[5] And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
The Father, seated on the throne, promises a total reset—everything made fresh and trustworthy.

[6] And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
He declares the plan complete (“It is done”) and offers living water—eternal life—free to anyone who thirsts.

[7] He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
The overcomer receives the full inheritance and enjoys a family bond with God forever.

Who is the overcomer?

1 John 5 : 5 KJV
[5] Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

Anyone—from any nation—who puts faith in Jesus overcomes and shares this inheritance.

Revelation 2 : 26‑27 (KJV) — Christ’s Swift Conquest

[26] And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:
[27] And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.

  • Some read this as a license to enslave other nations in the kingdom, but the context points to Jesus’ return and the brief moment He subdues rebellious powers (cf. Psalm 2 : 9).
  • Overcomers share in that victory, yet once the rebellion is crushed, Christ’s peace takes over—no perpetual captivity, just righteous order established “in a flash.”

Psalm 2 : 1‑12 (KJV) — Why the Nations Rage

[1] Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
They actually think they can defeat Christ.

[2] The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against His Anointed, saying,
[3] Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
Earth’s leaders unite in open rebellion.

[4] He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision (contemptuous ridicule).
God laughs at their tiny revolt.

[5] Then shall He speak unto them in His wrath, and vex them in His sore displeasure.
Holy anger follows the divine laugh.

[6] Yet have I set My King upon My holy hill of Zion.
Christ’s throne is already appointed—rebels can’t stop it.

[7] I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto Me, Thou art My Son; this day have I begotten Thee.
The Father publicly affirms the Son.

[8] Ask of Me, and I shall give Thee the heathen for Thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for Thy possession.
[9] Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; Thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.
Jesus will shatter the rebels (see Rev 2 : 26‑27).

[10] Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
Warning shot: rulers, take heed while there’s time.

[11] Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
[12] Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, and ye perish from the way, when His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in Him.
Bow to Jesus now—or face His swift wrath. Those who trust Him are blessed: they’re spared from destruction and share in His victory when He crushes the rebellious nations at His return.

Jeremiah 51 : 19‑20 (KJV) — The Lord’s Battle‑Axe

[19] The portion of Jacob is not like them; for he is the former of all things: and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: the LORD of hosts is his name.
[20] Thou art my battle axe and weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms.

  • God pictures His people as His “battle‑axe,” sharing in Christ’s final overthrow of rebellious nations.

Revelation 2 : 24, 26 (KJV) — Gentile Overcomers Share the Rule

[24] But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden.
Jesus addresses Thyatira—a largely Gentile church—promising relief to those who stay pure.

[26] And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations.
Every overcomer—Jew or Gentile—receives authority to share in Christ’s victory (cf. 1 Jn 5 : 5)

  • (P) Luke 19:17 KJV

And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.

  • This is what Rev. is talking about
  • In the kingdom, we will rule over many cities

Revelation 21 : 7‑8, 22‑23 (KJV) — Inheritance and Everlasting Light

[7] He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
The “overcomer” is anyone who puts faith in Jesus (1 Jn 5 : 5).

[8] But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
These remain outside Christ; their end is the lake of fire—the second death.

[22] And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
No separate building—God and the Lamb themselves are the sanctuary.

[23] And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
Christ’s glory lights Jerusalem; sun and moon are unnecessary inside the city.

Isaiah 60 : 19 (KJV)
[19] The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory.

Matches Revelation—God’s own radiance replaces celestial lights.

  • Inside Jerusalem: eternal daylight from Christ’s glory.
  • Outside the city: normal day‑night cycles continue, but the whole cosmos is part of a new heaven and earth after the old host of heaven is dissolved (Isa 34 : 4).
  • Overcomers—believing Jew or Gentile—inherit every promise; the unrepentant face the second death.

John 1 : 4, 9 (KJV) — The True Light

[4] In Him was life; and the life was the light of men.
His Spirit is the life‑giving light inside every believer.

[9] That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
Jesus Himself is that “true Light,” shining on everyone born into this world.

John 8 : 12 (KJV) — Light of the World

[12] Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
During His earthly ministry, He was the guiding light in a metaphorical sense—leading hearts out of darkness.

There was a moment when He displayed that light literally—the Mount of Transfiguration (Matt 17 : 2), where His face and garments shone like the sun, previewing the glory that will one day illuminate the New Jerusalem.

Matthew 17 : 1‑2 (KJV) — The Mount of Transfiguration

[1] And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,
[2] And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

  • Jesus lets the disciples glimpse His glory: His face blazes like the sun, His clothes gleam with pure light.
  • This preview shows He will be the true light of the kingdom.

Revelation 1 : 13‑15 (KJV) — John Sees the Same Glory

[13] And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
[14] His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
‑ “White like wool” points to color—brilliant, snow‑bright purity.
[15] And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.

  • In Greek, “burned in a furnace” pictures metal still glowing hot—radiating light.
  • John is seeing the same glorified state the three disciples saw on the mountain: Jesus shining with uncreated light, the radiance that will illuminate the New Jerusalem forever.

Revelation 21 : 23‑24 (KJV) — Nations in the Light

[23] And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
God’s own glory—shining through Jesus—lights up Jerusalem; no sun or moon required.

[24] And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.
People from every nation are saved and live by that same light, bringing their honor into the city.

Jeremiah 16 : 19 (KJV) — Gentiles Turn to the Lord

[19] O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit.
Jeremiah foresaw it: Gentiles abandon empty traditions and run to the true God—perfectly matching Revelation’s picture of saved nations walking in Christ’s light.

Isaiah 55 : 5‑11 (KJV) — Nations Running to the LORD

[5] Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not, and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the LORD thy God, and for the Holy One of Israel; for He hath glorified thee.
These “nations” are strangers, not the Northern Kingdom. Gentiles run to the LORD because He has lifted up His Servant.

[6] Seek ye the LORD while He may be found, call ye upon Him while He is near:
[7] Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.
Invitation is wide‑open: anyone—Israelite or Gentile—can repent and receive mercy.

[8] For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the LORD.
[9] For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.
We might limit salvation to Israel alone, but God’s plan is bigger.

[10] For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
[11] So shall My word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: it shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
God’s word never fails. Everyone He ordains to believe—Jew or Gentile—will hear, respond, and bear fruit.

Isaiah 60 : 3 (KJV) — Gentiles Drawn to the Light

[3] And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.
“Light” = Christ. From all nations, people stream to Zion—Jerusalem—where Jesus reigns.

Revelation 21 : 24‑27 (KJV) — Nations in the New Jerusalem

[24] And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it.
Saved Gentiles gladly bring their best to the city, uniting with God’s people.

[25] And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.
Christ’s glory makes perpetual daylight; access is always open to the righteous.

[26] And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it.
Every culture’s treasures are offered freely, celebrating one kingdom under Christ.

[27] And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
Only those recorded in Jesus’ book—no evil, no wickedness—dwell inside.

Revelation 22 : 3‑5 (KJV) — One Throne, One Light

[3] And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and His servants shall serve Him.
The same throne bears both titles—God’s and the Lamb’s—because Jesus sits as the visible image of the invisible Father.

Supporting chain:
Acts 2 : 29‑30 — David knew God would “raise up Christ to sit on his throne.”
1 Kings 2 : 12 — Solomon sat on David’s throne, a preview.
1 Chron 29 : 23 — That same seat is called “the throne of the LORD.”
Conclusion: David’s throne = the Lord’s throne = the throne where Jesus now reigns.

[4] And they shall see His face; and His name shall be in their foreheads.
Unbroken fellowship—fully known, fully marked as His own.

[5] And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
His glory outshines sun and moon, and His people share that reign forever.

Future snapshot:

  • No curse.
  • One throne with Jesus ruling in the Father’s stead.
  • Perfect light, no night.
  • Servants who see His face and reign with Him—eternally

1 Corinthians 15 : 26 (KJV) — Death Ends Forever

[26] The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
Once Christ finishes His work, death itself is gone—eternal life for everyone in His kingdom.

Isaiah 2 : 1‑5 (KJV) — World‑Wide Peace

[1] The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
[2] And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
[3] And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
[4] And He shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning‑hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
[5] O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.

  • God’s mountain (Jerusalem) stands over every other power.
  • People from every nation run there to learn His ways.
  • Weapons become farm tools—war itself disappears.
  • All walk in the Lord’s light.

Conclusion

God’s plan has always pointed to one goal: total peace.

  • Death destroyed (1 Cor 15 : 26).
  • War erased (Isa 2 : 4).
  • All nations living by Christ’s light.

A kingdom like that has no place for torture or oppression—only the harmony God intended from the very beginning.
