The video below is a video version of this article.
A lot of people today still believe we are required to keep the Sabbath the same way it was given in the law.
But the real issue is this:
most people don’t understand why the Sabbath was given in the first place.
In the previous breakdown of Matthew 5:17–20, it was shown that the law reached its fulfillment. But one part needed its own full explanation — the Sabbath. Click on this link for the article
To understand it properly, we have to go back to the beginning.
Two Sabbaths People Mix Up
Before anything else, you need to separate this:
- The Sabbath in Genesis (creation)
- The Sabbath given later in Exodus (law to Israel)
If you mix these together, everything will sound confusing.
The Pattern in Creation (God Closing Each Day)
In Genesis 1, there’s a clear pattern every time God finishes a day:
Genesis 1:5 (KJV)
And the evening and the morning were the first day.”
Genesis 1:8 (KJV)
And the evening and the morning were the second day.”
Genesis 1:13 (KJV)
And the evening and the morning were the third day.”
Genesis 1:19 (KJV)
And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.”
Genesis 1:23 (KJV)
And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.”
Genesis 1:31 (KJV)
And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.”
Every time God finishes creating for that day,
He closes the day.
That pattern is consistent for all six days.
What Happens on the Seventh Day?
Now look at the seventh day:
Genesis 2:1–3 (KJV)
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it…”
Here’s what stands out:
There is no “evening and morning”
The seventh day is never closed
That breaks the pattern on purpose.
Why This Matters
The first six days:
- Started
- Finished
- Closed
But the seventh day:
- Has no closing statement
That shows it’s not being treated like the other days
This is the foundation for everything else.
Did God Stop Working?
Some people think “God rested” means He stopped working completely.
But that’s not what Scripture teaches.
Isaiah 40:28 (KJV)
The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary…”
God does not get tired.
So His “rest” is not because He needed a break.
It means creation was finished
God Is Still Working
Christ confirms this directly:
John 5:17 (KJV)
My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.”
Even during what people call the Sabbath,
God is still working.
He stopped creating, not sustaining
If God stopped sustaining creation even for a moment, everything would fall apart.
The Original Sabbath Had No Law Attached
In Genesis:
- God blessed the seventh day
- God sanctified it
But notice:
No command was given to man
No restrictions were placed
No punishment was attached
It was set apart, but not yet turned into a system of rules.
Key Question
Now this is where the real question comes in:
If:
- God’s Sabbath was never closed
- God is still working
- And there were no restrictions in the beginning
Why did God later command Israel to stop working on the Sabbath?
What changed?
Where This Is Going
This is what the rest of the breakdown will answer:
- Why the Sabbath became a command under the law
- What its real purpose was
- And when that system came to an end
Because the truth is:
That system was not the original form
And it was never meant to last forever
The First Time Israel Gets Sabbath Instructions
Now we move from Genesis into when the Sabbath becomes a command.
This is where things change.
Exodus 16:5 (KJV)
And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.”
God tells Israel:
On the sixth day, gather double
Why?
Drop down:
Exodus 16:22–23 (KJV)
Exo 16:23 he said to them, “This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Tomorrow is a day of solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD; bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over lay aside to be kept till the morning.’
This is the First Time Restrictions Show Up
Notice what just happened:
Now there are instructions
Now there is structure
Now there are limits
This did not exist in Genesis.
In Genesis:
- No commands
- No “don’t work”
- No law attached
But here?
The Sabbath is now being told to the people with rules
“Tomorrow Is a Sabbath”
Look at the wording carefully:
Exo 16:25 Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to the LORD; today you will not find it in the field.
This is being introduced to them in practice.
At this point, Israel is learning:
- Prepare ahead
- Don’t gather like normal
- Treat this day differently
This is a new system being applied to them
The Shift
Before this:
- The Sabbath existed as something God set apart
Now:
- It becomes a command with structure
Six days work
Seventh day — stop
This structure is now being placed on Israel.
This Is Connected to the Covenant
Now watch when the covenant is officially made:
Exodus 24:7–8 (KJV)
“And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the Lord hath said will we do, and be obedient.
And Moses took the blood… and said, Behold the blood of the covenant…”
This is key:
The people agreed to obey everything spoken
That includes:
- The commandments
- The laws
- And the Sabbath structure
The Sabbath Is Part of That Agreement
The system of:
- Six days working
- One day no work
- No buying, selling, cooking
That is part of the old covenant system
Before this covenant?
You never saw those restrictions given to man
The Sabbath Was a Sign for Israel
Now this makes it even clearer:
Exodus 31:13 (KJV)
Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations…”
Notice this:
“Between me and you”
This is specific.
This sign is between God and Israel
Now It Becomes “The Sabbath”
Keep reading:
Exodus 31:16–17 (KJV)
“Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath… for a perpetual covenant.
It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever…”
Now you see the shift:
It’s no longer just “a Sabbath”
Now it’s “the Sabbath”
Why?
Because now:
- It’s established
- It’s known
- It’s part of their covenant system
Don’t Miss This Key Point
What was introduced in Exodus 16 was not:
- The idea of a seventh day
That already existed.
What was introduced was:
The legal structure
The restrictions
The binding command
What “God Rested” Still Means
And remember:
When it says God rested:
It does NOT mean He stopped working completely
It means He finished creation
That hasn’t changed.
The Big Issue People Struggle With
Now this is where people push back:
“It says forever”
“It says remember the Sabbath day”
Those are fair questions.
The Problem: “It Says Forever”
That sounds strong at first—but we have to define what “forever” means in the Bible.
Because the Bible doesn’t always use that word the way people use it today.
“Forever” Is Often Covenant-Based
When Scripture says something is “forever,”
it can mean:
As long as that covenant is in effect
Not always “never-ending no matter what.”
In other words:
It lasts for the duration of that system
Example: Circumcision Was Also Called “Everlasting”
Look at this:
Genesis 17:13 (KJV)
He that is born in thy house… must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.”
Circumcision = everlasting covenant
But now read:
Galatians 5:6 (KJV)
For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.”
So what happened?
Something changed
Circumcision was required under the old covenant
But under the new?
It no longer determines your standing
What That Proves
“Everlasting” did not mean it could never change
It meant it lasted as long as that covenant stood
Once the covenant changed:
That requirement no longer applied
Apply That to the Sabbath
Now go back to the Sabbath:
When it says:
- It is a sign
- It is forever
That is within the covenant it was given in
And we already established:
The Sabbath with restrictions is tied to the old covenant
So if the covenant changes…
The legal structure tied to it also changes
Don’t Mix the Two Sabbaths
This is where people get confused:
You have to separate:
- Genesis 2 Sabbath
- No restrictions
- No commands
- Just set apart
- Exodus Sabbath
- Legal system
- Rules and penalties
- Part of the covenant
These are not the same in function
Even Sacrifices Were Called “Forever”
This isn’t just about circumcision.
Even sacrifices were described in lasting terms under the covenant.
But we know:
Those also came to an end
So again:
“Forever” = tied to the covenant system
Not always endless across all time
Exo 29:42
42 This shall be a continual burnt offering throughout your generations at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD: where I will meet you, to speak there unto thee.
What About Abraham?
Another argument people use:
Abraham kept God’s laws, so he must have kept the Sabbath like Israel did.”
Let’s read it:
Genesis 26:5 (KJV)
Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”
Now here’s the question:
What laws was Abraham keeping?
Not the Sabbath System From Exodus
There is no record of Abraham:
- Keeping a weekly Sabbath with restrictions
- Following “six days work, seventh day no work”
- Being under that structure
Why?
Because that system wasn’t given yet
What Laws Did Abraham Keep?
Abraham followed what you can call:
Moral laws
Things like:
- Not murdering
- Not stealing
- Not committing adultery
These existed before Sinai.
You see this even before Moses:
- Cain judged for killing
- Sodom judged for wickedness
And Scripture confirms this idea:
Romans 2:14–15 (KJV)
…these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves…
Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts…”
Some laws were always known
They were already written within man
Why This Matters
So don’t assume:
“laws” = the full system from Exodus
Abraham was not under:
- The covenant at Sinai
- The Sabbath restrictions given to Israel
Everything we saw in:
- Exodus 16
- Exodus 20
- Exodus 31
Is tied to the old covenant system
That’s why this matters so much.
Because once you understand the covenant…
You understand the Sabbath system connected to it
Christ Brought a New Covenant
Hebrews 9:15 (KJV)
And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament… that by means of death… they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.”
What does this mean?
Christ is the mediator of a new covenant
His death brings us into something new
And it also says:
His death redeems us from the first covenant
When Does a Covenant Take Effect?
Keep reading:
Hebrews 9:16–17 (KJV)
For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.
For a testament is of force after men are dead…”
Simple point:
A covenant (or will) only starts after death
So what does that mean?
The new covenant began after Christ died and rose again
If the covenant changed…
Then what was tied to that covenant is also affected
And we already established:
The Sabbath restrictions were part of the old covenant system
So when the covenant changes:
Those legal restrictions are no longer binding
The Law and Priesthood Are Connected
Now look at this:
Hebrews 7:11 (KJV)
“If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood… what further need was there that another priest should rise…?”
If the old system was perfect:
There would be no need for Christ
Here’s the Key Verse
Hebrews 7:12 (KJV)
“For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.”
Don’t miss that.
Change the priesthood → you must change the law
They are connected.
What Changed?
Under the old covenant:
- Priesthood = Levites (Aaron’s line)
- Law system = includes Sabbath restrictions
But now:
Christ is our High Priest
Not from Levi
But from a different order
That Means the Whole System Is Affected
If Christ is now the High Priest…
You cannot still be under the old system fully
Because that system required:
- Levite priests
- Specific laws tied to them
So if the priesthood changed:
The law system tied to it also changes
Even Scripture Says the Old Command Was Set Aside
Hebrews 7:18 (KJV)
“For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof.”
That doesn’t mean it had no purpose.
It means it could not make us perfect
Why the Old System Was Temporary
The old system:
- Had priests who died
- Required repeated sacrifices
- Could not fully fix the heart
But Christ:
Has an indestructible life
Became priest by resurrection, not lineage
This Includes the Sabbath Restrictions
Now bring it back to the main point:
The Sabbath restrictions (no work, no buying, no cooking)
Came from that old covenant system
So when:
- The priesthood changes
- The covenant changes
Those legal bindings are also affected
A Better Covenant
Hebrews 7:22 (KJV)
“By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.”
We are now under:
A better covenant
Not the same system from Exodus.
You cannot say:
“I’m under Christ”
AND
“I’m still fully under the old covenant system”
That doesn’t work.
Because:
- New priesthood → new covenant
- New covenant → change in law
- Change in law → no binding Sabbath restrictions like before
Spiritual Circumcision Under Christ
Colossians 2:11 (KJV)
In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands… putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ.”
This is key:
This is not physical circumcision
This is spiritual
Meaning:
- The old sinful nature is being removed
- You are being made new
Buried and Raised With Him
Colossians 2:12 (KJV)
Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God…”
You die to the old life
You are raised into a new one
From Dead to Alive
Colossians 2:13 (KJV)
And you, being dead in your sins… hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses.”
Before Christ:
- Dead in sin
- Living by the flesh
Now:
- Made alive
- Forgiven
Not a license to sin
But no longer condemned by past sin
The Law That Stood Against Us
Now watch this carefully:
Colossians 2:14 (KJV)
Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us… and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.”
The law that stood against us
The one that condemned us
Was:
Nailed to the cross
This is the Mosaic system that brought legal demands and condemnation.
Victory Over Accusation
Colossians 2:15 (KJV)
And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly…”
Satan used:
- Sin
- And the law
To accuse people
But now?
That power is broken
That’s why Scripture says there is no condemnation in Christ.
So What Does That Lead To?
Colossians 2:16 (KJV)
Let no man therefore judge you… in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday… or of the sabbath days.”
Don’t miss that word:
“Therefore”
Meaning:
Because of everything Christ just did…
No Judgment on Sabbath Keeping
Now it’s clear:
No one can judge you based on:
- Food
- Feast days
- Sabbaths
Why?
Because that system was already dealt with at the cross
The Sabbath Was a Shadow
Colossians 2:17 (KJV)
Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.”
This is the key:
The Sabbath = shadow
Christ = substance
Example
Think of it like this:
- A shadow points to something real
- But the shadow is not the real thing
Or like a blueprint:
- The blueprint shows what’s coming
- But once the building is finished…
You don’t live in the blueprint

What This Means for the Sabbath
So now we can say clearly:
The Sabbath under the law pointed forward
It was never the final thing
It was showing something deeper…
Something fulfilled in Christ
Freedom Under the New Covenant
Now under Christ:
There is no legal requirement:
- Not “don’t work”
- Not “don’t cook”
- Not “don’t buy or sell”
That system is no longer binding.
What About Keeping a Day?
If someone wants to rest on a day
Study
Set time apart
That’s fine.
But:
It is not a requirement for righteousness
It does not make you more accepted
Freedom in Personal Practice
Romans 14:1 (KJV)
Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.”
Don’t argue over opinions
Different Views on Days
Romans 14:5 (KJV)
One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.”
This is clear:
Some people value certain days
Others treat all days the same
And what does Scripture say?
Be convinced in your own mind
Don’t force it on others
What This Means for the Sabbath
So if someone says:
- “I want to rest on Saturday”
- “I want to dedicate a day to God”
That’s fine
But:
You cannot say someone is in sin for not doing it
Because that would go against what was just written.
Don’t Turn Opinion Into Law
The problem comes when:
A personal conviction becomes a requirement
That’s where people go wrong.
Because now:
You’re putting people back under something Christ already freed them from
Now Christ Steps In
Let’s see how Christ Himself addressed the Sabbath.
Mark 2:23–24 (KJV)
And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day…
And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?”
The disciples were hungry and picking grain.
The Pharisees had a problem with it
Christ Uses David as an Example
Mark 2:25–26 (KJV)
“Have ye never read what David did…
How he went into the house of God… and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful…”
David did something technically “not lawful”
But was not condemned
Why?
Because there was a real need
The Point Christ Is Making
The Sabbath was never meant to:
Burden people
Harm people
Ignore real human need
But that’s what it became under strict interpretation.
Now here’s the statement that changes everything:
Mark 2:27 (KJV)
The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath.”
The Sabbath was made to serve man
Not for man to be controlled by it
Christ’s Authority Over the Sabbath
Mark 2:28 (KJV)
Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.”
Christ is Lord of the Sabbath
What “Lord” Means
The word “Lord” (Greek: kurios) means:
Owner
Master
One who has authority to decide
So when Christ says He is Lord of the Sabbath:
He is saying:
- It belongs to Him
- He has authority over it
- He decides its purpose and use
That Includes Authority Over Its Rules
If He is the owner…
He has the right to:
- Define it
- Fulfill it
- And release people from its obligations
And we already saw:
Through the cross, the legal system tied to it was removed

Christ Calls You Into Rest
Now listen carefully to what Christ says:
Matthew 11:28–30 (KJV)
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me… and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
This is key.
Christ is offering rest
But what kind of rest?
Not Physical — Spiritual
Notice what He says:
“Rest for your souls”
Not your body.
This is not about:
- One day a week
- Physical resting only
This is deeper
What Were People Under Before?
Before Christ:
Israel was under the Mosaic system
- Many laws
- Many restrictions
- Constant obligation
They were trying to:
- Earn righteousness
- Maintain standing with God
Through that system.
That Was a Heavy Burden
That’s the “heavy laden” Christ is talking about.
The pressure of the law
The weight of trying to be perfect
Now Christ Offers Something Different
“Come to me… I will give you rest”
Meaning:
- Stop trying to earn it
- Stop relying on that system
- Trust in Him
Understanding the “Yoke”
Christ says:
“Take my yoke upon you…”
A yoke is something that binds or controls.
So there are two yokes:
1. The Heavy Yoke
The old system
Law, pressure, obligation
2. The Easy Yoke
Christ
Faith, grace, relationship
Scripture Confirms the Difference
Galatians 5:1 (KJV)
Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
The old system = bondage
Christ = freedom
So What Is the True Sabbath?
Here’s the point:
The true Sabbath is not just a day
It is resting in Christ
Meaning:
- Trusting Him
- Being at peace with God
- No longer striving to earn righteousness
The Real Problem Today
A lot of people:
Focus on a physical day
But miss:
The spiritual rest
They worry about:
- “Am I working today?”
- “Am I keeping the day right?”
But don’t have:
Peace with God
Assurance in Christ
Christ’s Rest Is Better
Christ says:
My yoke is easy… my burden is light”
Why?
Because it’s based on:
- Faith
- Relationship
- Not performance
Comparison
To understand “easy”:
You have to know what was hard
- Old system = hard
- Christ’s way = light
The True Meaning of Sabbath
The Sabbath always pointed to this
Not just:
- A day of rest
But:
A state of rest with God
The Promise of Rest Still Stands
Now watch this carefully:
Hebrews 4:1 (KJV)
Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.”
Key point:
The promise to enter God’s rest still exists
That means:
It was not fully fulfilled in the past
Where Did God’s Rest Begin?
We already saw this:
God’s rest started in Genesis 2
That is:
- When creation was finished
- When the seventh day began
- The day that was never closed
Two Different “Rests” Again
You have to separate this:
1. Israel’s Rest (Exodus)
- Physical
- Stop working
- Weekly system
2. God’s Rest (Genesis)
- Ongoing
- Not closed
- Spiritual
These are not the same
Why Hebrews Says the Rest Is Still Available
If the Exodus Sabbath was the final rest…
Then Hebrews wouldn’t say the promise still stands
But it does.
That means:
The real rest was something deeper
Why Israel Didn’t Enter It
Hebrews 4:2–3 (KJV)
For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith…
For we which have believed do enter into rest…”
This is clear:
They heard the message
But lacked faith
So:
They did not enter God’s rest
How Do You Enter That Rest?
“We which have believed do enter into rest”
That means:
You enter God’s rest by faith
Not by:
- Keeping a day
- Following a system
- Doing works
God’s Rest Was Already Established
Still in verse 3:
“…although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.”
God’s rest already existed since creation
But people were not entering it.
Proof From the Old Testament
Psalm 95:10–11 (KJV)
Forty years long was I grieved with this generation…
Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.”
God said they would not enter His rest
But wait:
They were already keeping Sabbaths
They had the law
So what does that prove?
The Sabbath they were keeping was not the final rest
The Rest in Canaan Was Not Final Either
Even when they entered the land:
That was still not the full rest
It was:
A foreshadow
A type
Pointing to something greater
So What Is God’s Rest?
Now we can say it clearly:
God’s rest is not just physical
It is not just a weekly day
It is:
Being at peace with God
Being in unity with Him
Being complete in Him
And How Do You Enter It?
Through faith in Christ
- Trusting Him
- Relying on Him
- Not trying to earn it
God’s Rest Goes Back to Genesis
Hebrews 4:4–5 (KJV)
For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.
And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.”
This connects everything back to:
Genesis 2
God’s rest started there.
But notice:
People were still being told they had not entered it
That Means It’s Not the Exodus Sabbath
If the Sabbath in Exodus was the real rest…
This wouldn’t make sense
Because Israel already had that.
So clearly:
God’s rest ≠ the weekly Sabbath system
That Rest Is Still Open
Hebrews 4:6 (KJV)
Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein… they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief.”
The opportunity is still there
But many missed it because of unbelief
God Speaks Again About Another Day
Hebrews 4:7 (KJV)
…Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.”
This is important:
God is still inviting people into that rest
Even after:
- The law
- The Sabbath system
- The land of Canaan
Joshua Was Not the Final Rest
Hebrews 4:8 (KJV)
For if Jesus (Joshua) had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.”
This is clear:
The rest in the land was not the final rest
Even after they entered Canaan…
God still spoke of another rest coming
Proof From the Old Testament
Joshua 23:1 (KJV)
…the Lord had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies…”
They had rest from enemies.
But Hebrews says:
That still wasn’t the full rest
So What Was That Rest?
A type
A preview
Pointing forward to something greater
The Rest That Still Remains
Hebrews 4:9 (KJV)
There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.”
This is huge.
There is still a Sabbath rest remaining
Not past.
Not finished.
Still ahead.
This is the Greek word for the word Sabbath in this verse

What Kind of “Rest” Is This?
This word here points to:
A deeper rest
Not just a weekly day
It’s describing:
A final rest for God’s people
Who Is This Rest For?
Notice:
“The people of God”
Not just Israel.
But:
Anyone who believes by faith
Three Levels of Rest
Now we can see the full picture:
1. Genesis Rest
God’s rest (eternal, never closed)
2. Exodus Rest
Physical, temporary, symbolic
3. Final Rest
Eternal life, full peace, no more struggle
What Is the Final Rest?
This is the rest where:
- No more sin
- No more struggle
- No more suffering
- Full peace with God
Revelation 14:13 (KJV)
Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord… that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.”
This is the final rest
Not just:
- A day off
- A weekly cycle
But:
Eternal rest with God
What About Right Now?
Right now, believers already have:
Spiritual rest (by faith)
- Peace with God
- No condemnation
- Trust in Christ
But we are still:
Waiting for the full rest
- The weekly Sabbath was never the final goal
- It was a shadow pointing forward
- The true rest is found in Christ
- And the final rest is eternal life with God
That is what the Sabbath was always about.
The Final Rest Is Still Coming
Revelation 21:4 (KJV)
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain…”
This is the final rest
- No more pain
- No more struggle
- No more sin
- No more death
This is what everything was pointing to.
Three Levels of Rest
- Genesis Rest → God’s rest (never ended)
- Spiritual Rest Now → through faith in Christ
- Final Rest Coming → eternal life, full peace
That last one is still ahead
Christ Finished the Work First
Hebrews 4:10 (KJV)
“For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.”
Two layers here:
1. Christ
He finished the work
“It is finished”
Now He is in that rest
Believers
Now for us:
To enter that rest means:
- Stop trying to earn salvation
- Stop relying on your own works
- Trust fully in Christ
Salvation Is a Gift
Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV)
For by grace are ye saved through faith… not of works, lest any man should boast.”
You didn’t earn it
You can’t boast about it
If it was based on works:
It wouldn’t be a gift
Good Works Still Matter (But in Order)
Ephesians 2:10 (KJV)
For we are his workmanship… created in Christ Jesus unto good works…”
Works come after salvation
Not before
And even those works:
God is working through you
So What Does It Mean to Enter Rest?
It means:
- Trust Christ
- Stop striving to earn
- Walk in faith
That’s the spiritual Sabbath right now
What About “Sabbath in the Kingdom”?
Some people bring this up:
Isaiah 66:22–23 (KJV)
Isa 66:22-23
22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain.
23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.
At first, it sounds like:
We’ll keep weekly Sabbaths forever
But that’s not what it means.
This Is a Hebrew Expression
This is a way of saying:
Continuous worship
Like today we say:
“From morning to night”
It doesn’t mean literally every second is tracked like a schedule.
It means ongoing, nonstop
So What Is It Really Saying?
We will worship God forever
Not:
Go back into a weekly law system again
Now we can say it clearly:
The Sabbath was never about just a day
It was about:
- Rest in God
- Faith in Christ
- Eternal peace
Final Words
Right now:
You can have rest for your soul
And later:
You will have full rest forever
So stay strong:
- Stay in the faith
- Don’t go back to trying to earn it
- Trust what Christ already finished
Because in the end:
That rest is worth everything.
