How Many Resurrections? One—Not Two.

Important: Reading this article first and understanding it is crucial in order to fully understand this post. Click on this link

Many believe there were are separate resurrections — one for the righteous and one for the wicked.

But we understand something deeper:

When a person dies, they go straight to their place — either heaven or hell.
There’s no coming back from condemnation, and no second chance once judgment is set.

The common idea of two resurrections connected to a literal “1,000-year reign” doesn’t line up with Scripture, because:

  • The thousand years in Revelation 20 is symbolic, not literal.
  • Christ is reigning spiritually right now.
  • When He returns, His reign will continue forever on earth.

So the question is:
How many resurrections are there, really?

Let’s break it down verse by verse.

Revelation 20 : 4–6

Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.”

Believers may experience the first death — physical death — and that’s part of life in this fallen world.
But they will never face the second death, which is eternal separation from God in hell.

The “thousand years” here is symbolic, not a literal countdown. It represents the long, complete period of Christ’s spiritual reign, which began after His resurrection and continues through the Church Age.

Col 2:13-15

13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,

14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.

Right now, we reign with Christ spiritually — living under His authority, spreading His kingdom, and walking in the victory He already won.

Col 1:13-14

13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,

14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

When Christ returns:

  • All the dead — righteous and wicked — will be raised.
  • The righteous will enter eternal life with Him.
  • The wicked will face judgment and be cast into the lake of fire, which is the second death.

Romans 6 : 4

Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”

This verse speaks about spiritual resurrection.
Believers experience it when they die to sin and begin to live a new life in Christ.
It’s not about the body rising from the grave yet it’s about being made alive spiritually through faith.

John 5 : 25 – 29

Joh 5:25-27

25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

Jesus shows two stages of resurrection here:

  • “Now is” → the spiritual resurrection, when people who are dead in sin hear His voice and are made alive through faith.
  • “The hour is coming” → the physical resurrection, when all who are in the graves will rise at His return.

At that final resurrection:
There are not two separate events.
Both the righteous and the wicked will rise together
one to eternal life, the other to eternal judgment.

Acts 24 : 14–15

…that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.”

Scripture makes it clear:
There will be one resurrection for all people, both the righteous and the wicked.

Matthew 25 : 31–34, 41

Mat 25:31-34

31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:

32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:

33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

Mat 25:41

41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

When Christ returns, everyone — righteous and unrighteous — will be gathered before Him at the same time.

  • The righteous inherit eternal life.
  • The unrighteous are cast into everlasting fire.

No gap.
No separate stages.
Just one great gathering — one resurrection, one judgment.

2 Corinthians 5 : 10

2Co 5:10

10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

Every person — believer and unbeliever alike — will stand before Christ.
Judgment is universal, not divided into separate moments or groups.

There is only one final resurrection — when Christ returns:

  • Believers are raised to eternal life.
  • The wicked are raised to judgment and everlasting punishment.

The “first resurrection” in Revelation 20:5 is spiritual — believers already share in it through Christ’s life, freedom, and victory over sin.
The “second death” (eternal damnation) has no power over those who belong to Him.

Final resurrection

John 11 : 21–24

Joh 11:21-24 (KJVA)

21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

Martha’s response reveals she already believed in the resurrection —
but notice her timing: “at the last day.
She doesn’t say first resurrection or before the thousand years; she anchors it all at one final event.
That means there’s only one resurrection, and it happens at Christ’s return — the last day.

Revelation 20 : 1–4 — Satan Bound

Rev 20:1-4

1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

  • When was Satan bound? At the cross.
    • The “thousand years” is symbolic of this gospel period. Click this link for the thousand year breakdown
    • He is bound in the sense that he no longer deceives the nations like before.

At the cross, Christ tore down the wall of partition — now Gentiles are coming to the faith while Satan’s power is restrained.

  • When Satan is released (v3):
    • It isn’t instant — it’s by degrees.
    • The more people reject the faith, the more Satan is “loosed.”
    • Toward the end, his power increases again before final judgment/ second coming
  • What John saw in v4:
    • Believers who died for their faith are alive in heaven with Christ.
    • They are not unconscious they reign with Him spiritually until the final resurrection.
    • This is part of the “first resurrection” the believers coming into the faith and those who’s spirit are in heaven ruling with Christ.
  • Revelation 5:8–10 → The 24 elders represent the full people of God (Old Covenant tribes + New Testament apostles). Symbolic of believers reigning.
  • Revelation 7:9–17 → Believers who overcome this life are in heaven before God, reigning in the Spirit.
  • Revelation 2:11 → Believers will not be hurt by the second death (lake of fire).

The first resurrection. Rev 20:5

Rev 20:5

5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

“first resurrection” = the believer’s spiritual resurrection — the moment a person is born again, raised from death in sin to new life in Christ.

It comes before the physical resurrection.
It’s the first kind of resurrection believers experience — spiritual life now, physical life later.

It marks entry into Christ’s kingdom.
When a believer is saved, they spiritually rise and “reign with Christ” (Ephesians 2:5-6 — “hath quickened us together with Christ… and made us sit together in heavenly places”).

It separates the saints from “the rest of the dead.”
Those still spiritually dead (unbelievers) haven’t shared in that first resurrection yet — they remain under Satan’s rule.

Revelation 20:6

Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

If the first resurrection is spiritual (being born again through faith), then this blessing belongs to everyone who has experienced that spiritual rebirth.

  • They’re blessed, because they’ve been raised from sin and given new life in Christ (Ephesians 2:5).
  • They’re holy, because they’ve been set apart — separated from the world and made clean through Christ’s blood.

On such the second death hath no power

The second death means eternal separation from God — the lake of fire (see Revelation 20:14).

For believers who share in the first resurrection (salvation), the second death can’t touch them.

  • They’ve already passed from death to life (John 5:24).
  • Their names are in the book of life.
  • Hell has no claim over them anymore.

Revelation 20:10–12 (Judgment)

Rev 20:10-12

10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

  • Everyone will appear before the Great White Throne.
  • This includes both righteous and wicked, but the outcome is different:
    • The righteous are rewarded (not condemned).
    • The wicked are judged and cast into the lake of fire.
  • “The dead” here = those who died physically and now stand to be judged.

Revelation 11:18

Rev 11:18

18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

  • Believers appear before God not for condemnation, but to receive rewards.

The wicked appear for judgment to eternal destruction.

Revelation 20:12–15 (Final Judgment)

“…and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works… And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

  • God will reward and judge based on how people lived.
  • The wicked rise with new bodies fit for eternal destruction.
  • The righteous rise with new glorified bodies to reign with Christ forever.

2 Corinthians 5:10

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”

  • On that day, we will truly see how great God is.
  • We’ll realize how much mercy He showed us to save us, even though we were never good enough.

1 Corinthians 3:13–15

“Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”

  • Every believer’s works will be tested by fire.
  • Some will receive rewards if their works endure.
  • Others will suffer loss of rewards, but still be saved.
  • This shows salvation isn’t based on our ability to keep the law it’s by God’s mercy and grace.

The Dead in Christ

  • The saints are with Him in heaven now.
  • “The dead in Christ” refers to those who died a natural death and are with Christ already.
  • When He returns, they will come back with Him, and then those still alive on earth will join them.
  • This isn’t Jesus taking us to the Father’s house — it’s Him bringing believers together with Him in the sky while chaos is breaking out on earth. Heaven will be on earth.

1 Corinthians 15:51–54

1Co 15:51-54

51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

  • Some believers will live to see Christ’s return.
  • At that moment, both the living and the dead in Christ will be transformed.
  • Death will be swallowed up once and for all.

If death is destroyed at His return, there can’t be another “death” a thousand years later — that proves the 1,000 years isn’t literal.

Revelation 21:2–4

v. 2
And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
— The New Jerusalem represents God’s redeemed people, fully prepared and united with Christ.

v. 3
And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men…
— God now dwells among His people permanently. The separation between heaven and earth is gone.

v. 4
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death…
— All pain, sorrow, and death are ended forever. The former world of sin and suffering has completely passed away.

This completes the whole plan — one resurrection, one judgment, and then the eternal kingdom where God lives with His people forever. No more sin, no more separation, no more death.
